Apple Day puts apple varieties and origins in focus in Israel

Garden of Europe

JERUSALEM, ISRAEL, November 5, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Apple Day, observed on 21 October in a number of countries, provides an opportunity to explore different apple varieties, origins and culinary traditions.

According to the Israeli Plants Production and Marketing Board, apple varieties grown in Israel include Gala and Anna, as well as Starking apples, some of which are marketed under the name Hermon.

Apple Day provides an opportunity to explore this diversity and the different flavours, textures and culinary uses associated with individual apple varieties.

In this context, the Garden of Europe campaign, co-funded by the European Union, highlights four apple varieties originating in Poland, each offering distinctive characteristics and culinary possibilities.
Gala apples are medium-sized, crunchy and sweet, with red skin and yellow tones. Red Jonaprince apples are larger, with deep red colouring, firm flesh, a pleasant aroma and a sweet-tart flavour.

Red Delicious apples are juicy, crunchy and sweet, with dark red colouring and golden tones. Red Chief apples are known for their dark red skin, creamy-coloured crunchy flesh, pleasant aroma and sweetness.

From fresh snacks to baked desserts, these varieties offer different ways to enjoy apples. Their sweetness, acidity and texture can also influence the flavour and consistency of a recipe.

Now in its third year, the Garden of Europe campaign promotes European apples originating in Poland and European kiwifruit originating in Greece in selected international markets, including Israel.

To mark Apple Day, the campaign suggests an Apple and Honey Cake inspired by the traditional pairing of apples and honey in Jewish culinary tradition. Combining European apples with honey and cinnamon.

Ingredients
• 2 medium European Union apples, such as Gala, peeled, cored and diced
• 2 eggs
• 80 ml vegetable oil
• 80 ml honey
• 150 g all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
• A pinch of salt

Method
1. Preheat the oven to 175°C and grease or line an approximately 18 cm cake tin.
2. Whisk the eggs, vegetable oil and honey together.
3. Add the flour, baking powder, cinnamon and salt, stirring until combined.
4. Fold in the diced apples.
5. Pour into the tin and bake for 30–35 minutes, until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.
6. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

With its combination of apples, honey and cinnamon, this simple cake draws on a familiar culinary pairing. Prepared with European Union apples, it shows how European fruit can be used in a recipe inspired by Jewish culinary tradition.
