Provided by AGPThe group Adalah said it was notified by Israel’s internal security service that Brazilian activist Thiago de Avila and Spanish activist of Palestinian origin Saif Abukeshek are expected to be released later the same day. However, both individuals are set to be transferred to immigration authorities and remain in custody pending deportation procedures.
According to the statement, a district court in Beersheba recently rejected an appeal challenging the extension of their detention.
The activists were detained after an Israeli operation targeting the Global Sumud Flotilla near the eastern Mediterranean, in waters close to Crete. The flotilla was reportedly en route toward Gaza, an area under blockade for years.
Israel has maintained a blockade on Gaza since 2007, a policy it says is for security reasons, while critics argue it has severely restricted movement and humanitarian access for the territory’s population.
According to reports, tensions surrounding aid missions to Gaza have intensified in the context of the wider conflict that escalated in October 2023, which has resulted in widespread casualties and destruction in the territory.
